Sell MacBook Air M2 vs M3: Values Compared

By The SellMacBooks Team | Published 12 May 2026 | Updated 8 July 2026

Selling in mid-2026, a 13-inch MacBook Air M2 is worth roughly £480 in good condition and £220 faulty, while the M3 fetches about £600 and £270 - all indicative UK figures. The M3 carries a £100-£130 premium at every condition tier, and both sell fastest through fixed-quote buyback services rather than auction sites.

If you own one of these two machines and are weighing up a sale, the questions that matter are how big the value gap really is spec-for-spec, whether that gap is growing or shrinking, and which selling route converts your particular model into the most actual money. Taken in order below.

What are M2 and M3 MacBook Airs worth side by side?

Indicative UK buyback values for July 2026:

ConfigurationM2 (working)M3 (working)M2 (faulty)M3 (faulty)
13" 8GB / 256GB£450-£500£570-£630£200-£240£250-£290
13" 16GB / 256GB£510-£560£630-£690£230-£260£280-£310
13" 16GB / 512GB£550-£600£670-£730£250-£280£300-£330
15" 8GB / 256GB£530-£580£650-£710£240-£270£290-£330
15" 16GB / 512GB£620-£670£740-£800£280-£310£330-£360

Two patterns worth noticing in that table. Memory moves the needle more than screen size does: a 16GB 13-inch machine outsells an 8GB 15-inch of the very same generation. And the faulty column runs at about 44 percent of working value for both chips, so a cracked screen hurts an M3 owner more in absolute pounds.

How do you tell an M2 Air from an M3 - and why does it matter?

Apple gave the 13-inch M3 Air the same chassis, same colours and same Liquid Retina display as the M2, so the two are visually indistinguishable on a desk. Plenty of sellers genuinely do not know which they own, especially with hand-me-down or refurbished machines.

Confirm it in ten seconds: Apple menu, About This Mac, and read the Chip line. If the machine will not boot, the model number on the underside works instead - A2681 (13-inch M2), A2941 (15-inch M2), A3113 (13-inch M3), A3114 (15-inch M3).

Getting this right protects your quote. Describe an M2 as an M3 and the price gets corrected downwards at inspection; describe an M3 as an M2 and you have underpriced yourself by more than £100 before anyone even looks at it.

The colour is a partial clue if the machine is dead and the underside label has worn: Midnight and Starlight span both generations, but the M2 launched the redesigned flat chassis in 2022, so any wedge-shaped Air is neither of these machines - it is an M1 or an Intel, and priced very differently.

Is the M2's value falling faster than the M3's?

Not dramatically, which surprises people. Both generations are currently depreciating at an indicative £10-£14 per month, and the pound gap between them has stayed near £120 throughout the first half of 2026. The M2 took its steepest fall earlier, during 2024-25 when the M3 and then M4 launched above it; that painful stretch is already behind it.

The next inflection point is Apple's autumn 2026 event. Historically, each new Air generation knocks 8-12 percent off every model below it within about six weeks. On today's numbers that is roughly £40-£55 off an M2 and £50-£70 off an M3 - a real cost of waiting if your laptop is already sitting idle. A seller who acts in July or August 2026 banks the pre-announcement price; a seller who drifts into October does not.

One more depreciation lever sits inside the machine itself: battery wear. Cycle counts climb quietly, and crossing a grader's threshold moves you down a price tier overnight. We cover the exact thresholds in our guide to how battery health affects your sale price.

Where should you sell an M2 or M3 Air?

At the £480-£800 price level, the stakes are higher than for an old Intel machine, and the differences between selling routes get expensive.

Auction and marketplace sites. An M3 Air might list for £680 on eBay, but subtract roughly 13 percent in fees, add the genuine risk of a fraudulent "not as described" claim on a high-value item, and factor in relisting when the first buyer ghosts you. Net outcomes routinely land below a good buyback quote, three weeks later.

High-street trade-in chains. Fast, but their M2/M3 offers typically run £80-£150 under specialist rates because store overheads come out of your price.

Apple Trade In. Convenient if you are buying a new Mac the same day, but paid in gift credit at the meanest valuation of the lot.

Specialist buyback. Built for exactly these models. The process when you sell your MacBook Air with us: complete the online form with your chip, memory, storage and honest condition; a fixed quote lands by email within 2 working hours, any day of the week; we send a free fully-insured postage label, you drop the box at any Post Office, and the bank transfer arrives within 24 hours of passing inspection. The quote holds for 14 days, transit damage is our risk rather than yours, and if a revised offer ever disappoints you the laptop comes back free of charge. You can see the whole journey step by step on our how it works page.

Which one should you sell if you own both?

A surprisingly common situation - a household upgrade leaves an M2 and an M3 in circulation, and only one needs to go.

Sell the M2, keep the M3, in almost every case. The performance difference favours the machine you keep, while the resale difference is proportionally kinder to the M2: you are giving up less future value, because the older machine has less value left to lose. The exception is spec inversion - a 16GB/512GB M2 is a better daily computer than an 8GB/256GB M3 for most workloads in 2026, and macOS memory pressure makes 8GB the tighter constraint with every release. In that case keep the M2 and cash in the M3's generation premium.

What should you do before either machine ships?

The essentials, compressed: back up with Time Machine or iCloud, then use Erase All Content and Settings under System Settings, General, Transfer or Reset - the one-step flow that removes your Apple ID and kills Activation Lock. A machine still signed in to iCloud cannot legally be bought by anyone reputable, and it is the only show-stopper in the whole process. Bundle the original 30W or 35W charger if you still have it, photograph the laptop from all sides, and use the original box inside the shipping carton if it survived.

Then the decision is simply when. With M2 and M3 values flat through summer and a step down expected in the autumn, the answer for any Air already gathering dust is: get the quote now, use the 14-day lock to think, and let the machine pay for a decent chunk of whatever replaces it. On these two generations especially, procrastination has a measurable price per week - and the quote form takes less time than reading this article did.

Quick answers

Everything sellers ask us before posting their Mac - answered straight.

Is the M3 MacBook Air worth much more than the M2 second-hand?

Indicatively about £120 more: roughly £600 versus £480 for good 13-inch base models in mid-2026. The gap widens on 16GB configurations and 15-inch sizes. Both depreciate at a similar monthly rate, so the M3 premium holds steady rather than shrinking quickly.

How do I check whether my MacBook Air is M2 or M3?

Click the Apple menu, then About This Mac. The chip line states Apple M2 or Apple M3 directly. Externally the two 13-inch models are near identical, so never rely on appearance. The model identifier, Mac14,2 for M2 and Mac15,12 for M3, confirms it.

Should I sell my M2 Air and pay the difference for an M3?

Usually not for the chip alone, since real-world differences are small outside sustained heavy workloads. Upgrading makes more sense jumping from M2 to M4 or when moving from 8GB to 16GB of memory, which changes daily performance far more noticeably than one chip generation.
