Selling guides - missing accessories

Sell a MacBook Without the Charger, Box or Receipt

The quick answer

You don't need the charger, box or receipt to sell your MacBook. SellMacBooks quotes the machine itself: any Apple Silicon MacBook (M1-generation and newer), with or without accessories, gets a fixed quote within 2 working hours. Post it free and insured, paid within 24 hours of inspection. A genuine Apple charger counts only if you include it.

Chargers get lost, boxes go in the recycling, and receipts vanish with the email account they were sent to. None of it stops a sale or knocks your price down to a lower grade. What we grade is the Mac: screen, body, battery and function. Newer MacBooks sold in the UK don't even come with a charger in the box, so a machine without one is now the normal case, not the exception.

The only things we do need are that the Mac is yours to sell, that it's signed out of iCloud with Activation Lock removed, and that it's Apple Silicon - M1-generation or newer. Intel machines sit outside our window.

  • Free insured shipping
  • Paid within 24h of inspection
  • Data wiped to NIST standards
  • Free returns if you decline

How it works

Three steps from quote to cash: free insured post, no fees at any point.

  1. Get your quote

Tell us your Mac's model, spec and condition in the two-minute form. We email a fixed quote within 2 working hours, 7 days a week, locked for 14 days.

  2. Post it free

We email a prepaid, fully insured shipping label. Box your Mac, drop it at any Post Office, and we carry the transit risk, not you. Desktops are collected by courier.

  3. Paid within 24 hours

We inspect your Mac on the day it arrives and pay by bank transfer within 24 hours of it passing inspection. Decline a revised quote? We return your Mac free.

You don't need the charger

Our quote is for the machine. Include the genuine Apple charger if you have it and want it counted - say so in the form - and it's reflected in your price. Leave it out and the quote stands on the Mac alone, at the same grade. We don't deduct for a missing adapter, and a third-party charger isn't counted either way, so keep that one for your next laptop.

The same is true of cables. The USB-C or MagSafe 3 cable is optional; if it's handy, drop it in the box, but nothing changes if it isn't. What we need to see is that the Mac charges and holds charge - which we test on our own adapters at inspection, so you don't have to prove it.

If the machine is faulty rather than merely missing accessories, the broken MacBook hub explains how each fault is priced - a dead battery keeps 60-80% of working value, a cracked screen 45-55%.

No box, no receipt: what we actually need

ItemNeeded?Notes
The MacBook itselfRequiredApple Silicon - M1-generation or newer.
Signed out of iCloud, Activation Lock offRequiredRemove it from Find My at icloud.com. We can't buy a locked Mac.
Yours to sellRequiredYour own, or a business machine you're authorised to dispose of.
Genuine Apple chargerOptionalCounted only if you include it and say so. Third-party chargers aren't counted.
Original boxOptionalUseful as inner packaging; adds a little to a like-new machine.
Receipt / proof of purchaseOptionalKeep it for your records. Not needed for the sale.

Ownership is checked the way it should be: we verify the serial number and Activation Lock status on arrival. A receipt isn't part of that. The one thing that does stop a sale is a Mac still locked to an Apple ID - if it's yours, sign in at icloud.com and remove it from Find My, and the lock is gone in two minutes.

Stickers, dents and marks are graded, not rejected

A lid covered in stickers, a dented corner, scratches on the base: all of it is normal wear and all of it is graded. Hairline marks you only see at an angle stay in Good. Scratches you can feel with a fingernail, dents and cracked corners grade Fair. Neither is a rejection, and neither is a fault - the Mac is still fully working and quoted as such. The published criteria are on our grading page, so the grade you pick in the form is the grade you get.

Stickers: peel them off if they come away cleanly; adhesive residue doesn't affect the grade and we clean it. If a sticker is hiding a dent, mention the dent. Engraving on the base counts as a permanent mark and grades Fair. Honest description is what keeps the quote fixed - if inspection finds something different we email a revised offer with photos, and if you decline, the Mac comes back free and insured.

Newer MacBooks and chargers

Apple's UK tech specs for the current MacBook Pro and MacBook Air list only a USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable in the box - no power adapter, which Apple notes is sold separately. So a current-generation MacBook with no charger is simply how it was sold, and we treat it that way - it has no effect on your quote.

If you did buy the adapter separately and want it counted, include it. If you'd rather keep a good 70W or 140W Apple charger for your next machine, keep it - the quote is for the MacBook.

Posting it without the original box

Any double-walled box works. Wrap the closed MacBook in bubble wrap, surround it with 5cm of padding on every side so it can't move, and seal it well. Accept your quote and we email a prepaid, fully insured Royal Mail label; drop it at any Post Office. Our guide to packaging and posting a MacBook shows exactly how, and the shipping guide covers labels, drop-off and insurance. If you do have the original box, use it as the inner box inside a larger one - on its own it isn't padded enough for the post.

Paid by bank transfer within 24 hours of the Mac passing inspection. Quotes are locked for 14 days, so you can get your price today and post when the new machine arrives.

Before you quote

How condition affects your offer

Functional condition

Fully working machines quote highest. Faulty boards, cracked screens, liquid damage or no-power still sell if the Mac is Apple Silicon. Describe the fault honestly on the form.

Cosmetic condition

Like new, Good and Fair grades are published on our grading page. Light wear rarely moves a quote much; heavy dents or missing keys do.

Good to know

Your questions, answered

Everything sellers ask us before posting their Mac - answered straight.

Do I need the charger to sell my MacBook?

No. Our quote is for the MacBook itself; the charger, box and receipt are optional. If you have the genuine Apple charger and want it counted, include it and say so in the form. Newer MacBooks sold in the UK ship without a charger anyway, so a missing adapter is normal, not a fault.

Does the original box add value?

A little on a like-new machine, nothing worth chasing on a used one. Grading is about the Mac: screen, body, battery and function. If you have the box, use it as the inner packaging; if not, any double-walled box with 5cm of padding is fine and our free insured label covers it.

Do I need the receipt or proof of purchase?

No. What matters is that the Mac is yours to sell and signed out of iCloud, with Activation Lock removed. We verify the serial number and lock status on arrival. A receipt is useful to keep for your own records, but it isn't required for a normal sale.

Do stickers or dents mean you'll reject my MacBook?

No. Stickers, scuffs, dents and scratches are graded, not rejected. Light wear grades Good; heavy dents, deep scratches or cracked corners grade Fair - the exact criteria are on our grading page. Peel stickers off if you can; residue doesn't matter. The quote is fixed once the grade matches your description.

Will a third-party charger count?

It won't be held against you, but it doesn't add anything either - we only count a genuine Apple adapter, and only if you choose to include it. Keep a third-party charger for your next machine. The MagSafe or USB-C cable is likewise optional and makes no difference to the quote.

Which newer MacBooks come without a charger?

Apple's UK tech specs for the current MacBook Pro and MacBook Air list only a USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable in the box, with the power adapter sold separately. A current-generation Mac with no charger is simply how it was sold and has no effect on your quote.

About the buyer

What is SellMacBooks?

SellMacBooks is a UK buy-back service for Apple computers only. We have no shops and no drop-in counter: every sale runs by post, anywhere in the country. You describe your Mac, we email a fixed quote within 2 working hours, you post it free on a fully insured label, and payment leaves by bank transfer within 24 hours of the machine passing inspection.

We buy Apple Silicon Macs only - M1-generation and newer (2020 onward), working or broken. We do not buy Intel Macs. Macs are the only thing we handle, so the person pricing yours knows what the model is worth this month rather than reading it off a generic gadget table. See how it works or read about us.

The inspection

Everything we check before quoting a MacBook Without the Charger

Your quote is built from what you tell us, and the bench check on arrival exists to confirm that description rather than renegotiate it. Here is exactly what we look at:

  • Power-on and a clean boot to the desktop
  • Screen: cracks, dead pixels, backlight and marks
  • Chassis and cosmetics: dents, deep scratches, worn palm rests
  • Battery health percentage and cycle count
  • Keyboard, trackpad, speakers and every port
  • Storage size, memory and chip against the spec you quoted
  • Find My / Activation Lock signed out (we cannot buy a locked Mac)
  • Accessories included, such as the original charger

The quoted price is fixed and locked for 14 days. If the machine differs from your description, you get photos and a plain explanation with a revised offer - accept it, or decline and we return the Mac free and insured. Full detail on the three grades is on our grading page.

Versus the alternatives

How we compare

Selling a Mac in the UK usually comes down to a big trade-in site, a marketplace listing, or a specialist buyer like us. The differences that cost sellers money are these:

  • Big trade-in sites can keep you waiting days after delivery. We pay within 24 hours of your Mac passing inspection.
  • eBay takes roughly 14% in fees, plus postage, plus return and scam risk. Our quote is the amount that lands in your bank.
  • Some buyers put the courier damage risk on you in their small print. Our label is insured at our expense, both ways.
  • Return fees for declining a revised offer are common in this market. Ours are always free, both ways, whatever inspection finds.
  • Most quotes quietly expire or float with the market. Yours is locked for 14 days.

The longer version, option by option, is in our guide to the best place to sell a MacBook in the UK and our MacBook trade-in comparison.

Why sellers choose us

Guarantees you can check, not vague promises

Buyback trust is process, not slogans. These four commitments sit in every quote email and on our how it works page.

  • Quote locked 14 days

The emailed price stands while you wipe and pack. No silent expiry.

  • Paid within 24 hours

Bank transfer after inspection matches what we quoted, if your description was accurate.

  • Free insured post

We email the label. Transit risk sits with us, not you.

  • Free returns if you decline

If inspection revises the offer and you say no, the Mac comes home free and insured.
