MacBook Value Checker: What Your Mac Is Worth Today

The quick answer

To check your MacBook value, answer seven short questions below - model, storage, memory, battery health and condition - and the calculator shows a live price range from our published UK price list. Send it and we email a fixed cash quote within 2 working hours, locked for 14 days.

We buy Apple Silicon Macs only - M1-generation and newer (2020 onward), working or broken. We do not buy Intel Macs. Working or broken, the checker gives you a number either way - and it tells you honestly when it cannot, rather than quoting a figure it will later walk back.

  • Free insured shipping
  • Paid within 24h of inspection
  • Data wiped to NIST standards
  • Free returns if you decline

Check your Mac's value

Answer seven short steps and watch the range update. Apple Silicon only (M1 and newer). Your fixed quote is emailed within 2 working hours and locked for 14 days.

1. Your Mac

We buy Apple Silicon Macs only - M1-generation and newer (2020 onward), working or broken. We do not buy Intel Macs.

Checking MacBook value by serial number

Plenty of sites promise an instant valuation from a serial number. It is worth knowing why that promise is thin. Apple serial numbers issued from roughly 2021 onward are randomised: they are a unique identifier and nothing more, with no factory code, no production week and no model information encoded in them. Older formats were only partially readable, and Apple's own Check Coverage page is behind a captcha with no public API for anyone to query.

So we do the honest version. Add your serial to the form if you have it and we confirm the exact machine against Apple's records by hand while writing your quote - it protects you from a mis-described model and us from buying the wrong thing. The live range on this page comes from what you tell us about the Mac, not from the serial.

How to find your exact model

  1. Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of the screen.
  2. Choose “About This Mac”.
  3. Read off the model name and year, the chip (for example M3 Pro), the memory, and the serial number.

Those four details - model, chip, memory, serial - identify your Mac far better than a serial number on its own.

What changes your price

Five things move a Mac's value, and the checker asks about each in turn. The multipliers behind them are the same ones published in our grading guide - nothing is applied on arrival that you did not already see.

  • Model and chip — the single biggest factor. An M5 machine and an M1 machine of the same shape are worth very different money.
  • Storage and memory — higher configurations sell for more, especially 32GB and above, which buyers running local AI models compete for.
  • Condition — a fully working Mac with normal wear pays 85–100% of the working value; like-new pays the full amount. Damage is priced, not refused.
  • Battery health — above 90% changes nothing. Below 80%, or a "service battery" warning, typically moves a quote by £30–£60 rather than dropping it a whole grade.
  • Accessories — a genuine Apple charger adds a little. No box and no receipt is never a deduction; the quote is for the machine.

Broken machines have their own bands. See what we pay for broken Macs for cracked screens, liquid damage and machines that will not power on.

How the fixed quote works

The range on this page is indicative. The number that matters arrives by email within 2 working hours of you sending the form, and it is fixed: locked for 14 days, and paid in full when the Mac matches your description. There is no arrival-day markdown built into the model.

  1. Quote — a fixed price by email within 2 working hours, locked for 14 days.
  2. Post it free — accept and we email a prepaid, fully insured Royal Mail label; desktops are collected free by courier. Our packing and shipping guide covers how to box it safely.
  3. Get paid — bank transfer within 24 hours of your Mac passing inspection. Every Mac is erased to the NIST 800-88 standard afterwards.

If an inspection ever turns up something your description missed, you get a revised offer with photos and a plain explanation. Decline it and your Mac comes back free and insured. The full process is set out on how it works.

One thing Royal Mail will not carry: a MacBook with a swollen or damaged lithium battery. Tell us in the form and we arrange the right service instead of a postal label.

Good to know

MacBook value checker - FAQs

Everything sellers ask us before posting their Mac - answered straight.

Can you check a MacBook's value by serial number?

Not instantly, and nobody honestly can. Apple serials issued from around 2021 are randomised and encode nothing about the model, and Apple's coverage checker has no public API. Add your serial to the form and we confirm the exact machine by hand when we write your quote.

How accurate is the live range on this page?

It is built from the same published price list as the rest of the site, adjusted for the condition you describe. Treat it as indicative. Your fixed quote arrives by email within 2 working hours, is the price we actually pay, and stays locked for 14 days.

Which Macs can I check the value of here?

Apple Silicon Macs only, M1-generation and newer: MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio and Mac Pro. We do not buy Intel Macs. If you pick an Intel chip the checker says so straight away and points you to our Intel value guide instead.

Does a cracked screen or dead battery stop me getting a value?

No. The checker prices damage rather than refusing it: cracked screens, liquid damage, dead batteries and Macs that will not power on all return a range. The only machine we cannot buy at any price is one with Find My or Activation Lock still switched on.

Do I have to send photos to get a value?

No, photos are optional. They help when there is visible damage, because the quoting team can grade it without a second email. Photos are resized in your browser before sending, which also strips the location data cameras add, and they reach us as email attachments.

Where do I find my Mac's exact model and serial?

Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner and choose About This Mac. That one screen shows the model name and year, the chip, the memory and the serial number. Those four details identify your machine far more reliably than the serial number alone.

About the buyer

What is SellMacBooks?

SellMacBooks is a UK buy-back service for Apple computers only. We have no shops and no drop-in counter: every sale runs by post, anywhere in the country. You describe your Mac, we email a fixed quote within 2 working hours, you post it free on a fully insured label, and payment leaves by bank transfer within 24 hours of the machine passing inspection.

We buy Apple Silicon Macs only - M1-generation and newer (2020 onward), working or broken. We do not buy Intel Macs. Macs are the only thing we handle, so the person pricing yours knows what the model is worth this month rather than reading it off a generic gadget table. See how it works or read about us.

The inspection

Everything we check before quoting a Mac

Your quote is built from what you tell us, and the bench check on arrival exists to confirm that description rather than renegotiate it. Here is exactly what we look at:

  • Power-on and a clean boot to the desktop
  • Screen: cracks, dead pixels, backlight and marks
  • Chassis and cosmetics: dents, deep scratches, worn palm rests
  • Battery health percentage and cycle count
  • Keyboard, trackpad, speakers and every port
  • Storage size, memory and chip against the spec you quoted
  • Find My / Activation Lock signed out (we cannot buy a locked Mac)
  • Accessories included, such as the original charger

The quoted price is fixed and locked for 14 days. If the machine differs from your description, you get photos and a plain explanation with a revised offer - accept it, or decline and we return the Mac free and insured. Full detail on the three grades is on our grading page.

Versus the alternatives

How we compare

Selling a Mac in the UK usually comes down to a big trade-in site, a marketplace listing, or a specialist buyer like us. The differences that cost sellers money are these:

  • Big trade-in sites can keep you waiting days after delivery. We pay within 24 hours of your Mac passing inspection.
  • eBay takes roughly 14% in fees, plus postage, plus return and scam risk. Our quote is the amount that lands in your bank.
  • Some buyers put the courier damage risk on you in their small print. Our label is insured at our expense, both ways.
  • Return fees for declining a revised offer are common in this market. Ours are always free, both ways, whatever inspection finds.
  • Most quotes quietly expire or float with the market. Yours is locked for 14 days.

The longer version, option by option, is in our guide to the best place to sell a MacBook in the UK and our MacBook trade-in comparison.
