How Storage Size Changes MacBook Resale Value

Storage changes a used MacBook's value more than any spec except the chip itself. On popular Apple silicon models, moving from 256GB to 1TB adds roughly £80 to £150 to a quote, indicatively - because the SSD is soldered to the logic board and can never be upgraded, buyers pay real money for capacity they cannot add later.
Plenty of sellers never mention their storage size when comparing offers, and plenty of buyback forms barely reward it. Both habits leave money on the table, and this article explains why.
How much is each storage tier actually worth?
Here is an indicative picture of how capacity moves prices on two popular models in good condition in mid 2026:

The steps are not identical across models, but the shape always holds: each doubling of capacity adds a meaningful, non-trivial chunk. On the M3 Pro above, the spread from base to 1TB is £100 to £150 - more than most cosmetic condition differences will cost you, and more than an original box and charger will ever add.
Notice, too, that the premium is proportionally bigger on the Air. A £100 uplift on a £480 machine is over 20 per cent of its value; the same uplift on a £900 machine is closer to 11 per cent. If you own a high-capacity mid-range Mac, storage may be the single most valuable line on your spec sheet.
Why does soldered storage command such a premium?
Three forces stack on top of each other.
There is no aftermarket fix. Since 2016 every MacBook has shipped with its SSD soldered to the logic board, and on Apple silicon machines the storage controller lives inside the chip package itself. A buyer who purchases a 256GB machine and later runs out of room has no upgrade path at all - their only options are external drives dangling off a port, or selling up and starting again. That permanence turns capacity into a hard constraint, and hard constraints get priced.
Apple charges heavily for it new. Configuring a new MacBook from 256GB to 1TB costs £400 at Apple's UK build-to-order prices. Second-hand buyers know this, so a used machine carrying that upgrade reads as £400 of factory spec they can get for a fraction of the price. The used premium of £80 to £150 is actually a steep discount on what the capacity cost new - which is exactly why high-storage used Macs sell quickly.
256GB is starting to feel small. macOS itself, a photo library, a few years of documents and one or two large applications will crowd a 256GB drive. Video editors, photographers, developers and music producers - the heart of the used-Mac buying market - routinely filter search results to 512GB and above. Fewer eligible buyers for base-spec machines means softer prices; more competition for bigger drives means firmer ones.
Can a bigger drive make an older Mac worth more than a newer one?
Frequently, yes, and it surprises sellers every time. An M2 Air with 1TB of storage can land within touching distance of - occasionally above - a base 256GB M3 Air, because the buyer weighing those two machines is comparing a small speed bump against four times the room for their files. The reverse warning also applies. The headline figure - 256GB, 512GB, 1TB or 2TB - is your machine's total capacity, and it is the number that belongs on any quote form. Two easy mistakes to avoid: do not quote the free space shown on the drive (a 1TB Mac with 200GB free is still a 1TB Mac), and do not rely on memory of what you ordered years ago, because refurbished and hand-me-down machines often carry different specs than their owners assume.
If the machine no longer powers on, the storage size is usually printed on the original box's spec label or listed on your Apple order confirmation email. A dead Mac with a big SSD retains genuine value - the capacity survives even when other components fail, which feeds directly into the quote when you sell a broken MacBook.
Can an external drive make up for a small SSD?
Sellers of 256GB machines sometimes argue that a buyer can simply plug in an external SSD, so the internal capacity should not matter much. The market disagrees, for defensible reasons. Intel-era MacBook Airs commonly shipped with 128GB, a capacity that modern macOS updates and app sizes have made genuinely restrictive. On these machines the storage effect works in reverse: rather than earning a premium, small drives now actively suppress demand, and a 128GB model can trail its 256GB sibling by a wider margin proportionally than any gap on the Apple silicon side. If you own one, its value is eroding on two fronts at once - age and capacity - which argues for selling sooner rather than later.
Does more storage help even if the Mac is faulty?
Yes, because valuable parts hold value independently of the fault. A faulty MacBook Pro 14 inch M3 is worth around £400 indicatively at base spec, and a 1TB example will sit meaningfully above that, since the logic board - where the storage lives - is the most sought-after component in any donor machine. Cracked screen, dented lid, dead battery: none of those faults touch the storage premium at all.
