M4 or M4 Pro: how to tell which Mac mini you have

Both chips shipped in the same 2024 redesign, the small square case with two ports on the front and the power button underneath, so the outside will not tell you. About This Mac names the chip in its first line. If the mini will not start, look at the three USB-C ports on the back: on the M4 Pro they are Thunderbolt 5, and on the base M4 they are Thunderbolt 4. The HDMI port, the Ethernet port and the two front USB-C ports are the same on both.

The M4 Pro itself came in two versions. The standard chip has a 12-core CPU and a 16-core GPU; the upgrade has 14 CPU cores and 20 GPU cores. Memory was 24GB as standard, with 48GB and 64GB as options, and 64GB was never offered on the base M4 at all. Storage ran from 512GB to 8TB. Copy the core counts, memory and storage from About This Mac into the quote form, because those figures decide the price, not the chassis.

One more option is invisible from outside: 10Gb Ethernet. It was a paid upgrade over the standard Gigabit port, and the buyers who want an M4 Pro mini as a small server or a shared render node care about it. Check the Ethernet line under System Report, or your original order, and mention it if you have it.

What decides a Mac mini M4 Pro quote

Memory first, storage second, then the chip version. Memory cannot be added after purchase, so a 48GB or 64GB machine sits well above the 24GB base at resale; developers running containers, editors and anyone experimenting with local models buy for headroom. A 1TB or 2TB drive adds a clear step over 512GB, and the 4TB and 8TB drives more still.

Condition barely moves the number on a mini. There is no display and no battery, so scuffs on the aluminium cost next to nothing. Faults do count, but they do not sink the machine: a dead port, a fan that has stopped or a board that will not power on still sells, at around £250 for a faulty M4 Pro, because the memory and logic board keep their parts value. Describe the fault in the form and the figure is instant, with no photos.

This page is for the Pro chip. If yours is the base M4 mini, its page carries the £380 figure and the 16GB, 24GB and 32GB memory tiers. If you own the newer M5 Pro mini, that page prices the current pro-tier machine.

Now one behind the M5 Pro mini: sell or keep?

The M5 Pro mini went on sale on 22 September 2026, and that launch was the step down the M4 Pro was always going to take. What follows is a gentler slope until the next pro-tier refresh, when it becomes two generations old and drops again. If the machine is idle, or an M5 Pro or a Studio has already replaced it, the months before that refresh are the better time to sell.

The case for keeping it is real too. An M4 Pro with 48GB or 64GB still handles serious compile, edit and inference work, and Thunderbolt 5 keeps it current for fast external storage. Nobody should sell a daily machine to chase a curve. Selling makes sense when the mini has become the spare, because a spare loses a little more at every Apple event.

Upgrading anyway? Quote the M4 Pro first and hold the price. The 14-day lock gives you time for the new machine to arrive and for Migration Assistant to move everything across before you box the old one.

Posting a Mac mini M4 Pro

The mini is the easiest Mac to sell by post: the power supply is built in, so there is no brick to find, and the whole machine fits in a shoebox with padding. Print the free insured label we email, hand the parcel in at any Post Office, and the transit risk is ours up to the quoted value. You do not need to send the power cable, a keyboard, a mouse or a display.

Sign out of your Apple Account and turn off Find My before you pack it, so the mini is not Activation Locked. Leave the erase to us: every Mac we buy is wiped to NIST 800-88 standards after inspection. Payment follows within 24 hours of the mini passing, and if a revised quote is ever declined we return it free and insured, with no fee.

Good to know

Mac mini M4 Pro - FAQs

Everything sellers ask us before posting their Mac - answered straight.

How much is a Mac mini M4 Pro worth in 2026?

Indicatively around £550 in good condition and around £250 if faulty. A 48GB or 64GB build, a larger SSD or the 10Gb Ethernet option quotes above the base figure, and the M4 Pro sits clearly above a base M4 mini at £380. Your emailed quote is exact and locked for 14 days.

How is the M4 Pro mini different from the M4 mini?

The M4 Pro has more CPU and GPU cores, three Thunderbolt 5 ports instead of Thunderbolt 4, memory of 24GB, 48GB or 64GB rather than 16GB to 32GB, and an optional 10Gb Ethernet port. Buyers treat it as a compact workstation, so it quotes well above the base M4.

Is it worth selling the M4 Pro now the M5 Pro mini is out?

If it is idle or already replaced, yes. The M4 Pro took its biggest step down when the M5 Pro mini went on sale on 22 September 2026, and from here it eases gently until the next pro-tier refresh. Selling before that keeps more of its value than waiting.

Does 64GB of memory add much to a Mac mini M4 Pro quote?

Yes. Memory is fixed at purchase, 64GB was only offered on the Pro chip, and buyers who run local models or heavy virtual machines seek it out because they cannot upgrade later. List memory, core counts and storage from About This Mac so the quote matches your build.

Do you buy a broken Mac mini M4 Pro?

Yes. A mini that will not power on, has a dead port or a failed fan still gets a fixed quote from your description, around £250 for a faulty M4 Pro, with no photos. Post it with the same free insured label and the figure holds on arrival if the fault matches what you told us.

The inspection

Everything we check before quoting a Mac mini M4 Pro

Your quote is built from what you tell us, and the bench check on arrival exists to confirm that description rather than renegotiate it. Here is exactly what we look at:

  • Power-on and a clean boot to the desktop
  • Screen: cracks, dead pixels, backlight and marks
  • Chassis and cosmetics: dents, deep scratches, worn palm rests
  • Battery health percentage and cycle count
  • Keyboard, trackpad, speakers and every port
  • Storage size, memory and chip against the spec you quoted
  • Find My / Activation Lock signed out (we cannot buy a locked Mac)
  • Accessories included, such as the original charger

The quoted price is fixed and locked for 14 days. If the machine differs from your description, you get photos and a plain explanation with a revised offer - accept it, or decline and we return the Mac free and insured. Full detail on the three grades is on our grading page.

Versus the alternatives

How we compare

Selling a Mac in the UK usually comes down to a big trade-in site, a marketplace listing, or a specialist buyer like us. The differences that cost sellers money are these:

  • Big trade-in sites can keep you waiting days after delivery. We pay within 24 hours of your Mac passing inspection.
  • Selling privately means listings, postage, returns and scam risk. Our quote is the amount that lands in your bank.
  • Some buyers put the courier damage risk on you in their small print. Our label is insured at our expense, both ways.
  • Return fees for declining a revised offer are common in this market. Ours are always free, both ways, whatever inspection finds.
  • A quote that expires or floats with the market is hard to plan around. Yours is locked for 14 days.

The longer version, option by option, is in our guide to the best place to sell a MacBook in the UK and our MacBook trade-in comparison.
