Selling an M4 Pro or M4 Max MacBook Pro: What Sets the Price

A used M4 Pro or M4 Max MacBook Pro is priced mainly by its memory tier, then by its chip (M4 Pro, the 14-core M4 Max or the full 16-core M4 Max), then screen size and storage. AppleCare+ and light wear matter much less. Indicatively, a 16-inch M4 Pro is around £1,450 and a 16-inch M4 Max around £1,600.

Those two figures are only the starting points. The 2024 MacBook Pro was sold in a wide spread of chip, memory and storage combinations, and two machines that look identical on a desk can be several hundred pounds apart. How do you find your exact configuration?

Open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. You will see the chip, the memory, the serial number and the macOS version. For the detail that matters most, click More Info, then System Report, and select Hardware: the overview lists the chip's CPU core count. Storage is under General, Storage in System Settings.

Write down five things: chip name, CPU core count, memory, storage and screen size. Add whether it has the nano-texture display, which Apple offered as an option on both sizes. That list is everything a buyer needs to price the machine.

Which spec moves the price most?

In order of impact, for this generation:

1. Memory. The biggest lever by far, because unified memory is fixed at purchase and can never be upgraded.
2. Chip. M4 Pro, then 14-core M4 Max, then 16-core M4 Max.
3. Screen size. The 16-inch sells for more than the 14-inch at the same chip.
4. Storage. Meaningful, but in smaller steps than memory.
5. Condition and battery. Rarely decisive on a machine this young, unless there is damage.
6. AppleCare+ and extras. Small.

The reason memory leads is demand. Many buyers of these machines run heavy creative work or local AI models, where memory decides what the laptop can do at all. A buyer cannot add it later, so a high-memory machine is scarce on the used market and priced accordingly.

M4 Pro, 14-core M4 Max or 16-core M4 Max?

Apple's tech specifications show three distinct chips across this range, and each one caps the memory you could buy:

Two details trip people up. First, the 12-core M4 Pro was offered only in the 14-inch; every 16-inch M4 Pro has the 14-core chip. Second, a "36GB M4 Max" is always the cut-down 14-core Max, so it sits below a 48GB M4 Max in value even though both say Max. If your Mac has 64GB or 128GB, it is the full 16-core chip, and that is the configuration buyers look for most.

What are they worth?

The gap between the standard 16-inch M4 Max and the 128GB build is the clearest evidence of what memory is worth in this range. Faulty machines keep a large share of their value, because a nearly-new logic board, display and memory are exactly the parts specialists need. Does 14-inch versus 16-inch matter?

Yes, consistently. At the same chip and memory, the 16-inch sells for more: it has the larger display, a bigger battery and it only ever came with the stronger 14-core M4 Pro. The 14-inch has its own buyers who want portability, and a 14-inch with a 16-core Max and high memory can still outprice a lower-spec 16-inch. How much does storage add?

M4 Pro machines started at 512GB and went up to 4TB; M4 Max machines started at 1TB and went up to 8TB. Extra storage adds value in steps, more so at the top where video editors and AI users fill drives quickly. It rarely changes the price as much as memory does, though, so treat it as the fourth question rather than the first. List the exact capacity, since a buyer who has to assume the base size will price the base size.

Does AppleCare+ or the nano-texture display add anything?

Only a little. Apple lets you transfer AppleCare+ to a new owner, which reassures a private buyer, or cancel the plan instead. A buyback quote is graded on the machine itself, so remaining cover matters less than memory or condition. The nano-texture display is a genuine option buyers look for, so mention it, but it does not move the price the way memory does.

Does battery or condition matter on a machine this new?

Less than on older Macs. Apple rates these batteries for 1,000 cycles, and a machine this age is often well below that. Check the cycle count under System Information, Power, and include it. Cosmetic wear on a two-year-old MacBook Pro is usually light; what changes a quote is a crack, a dent, liquid damage or a failed component. Is now the time to sell?

The M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro arrived in March 2026, so the M4 Pro and M4 Max are one generation behind.
