Is yours an M4, an M4 Pro or an M4 Max?

All three chips went into the same 2024 chassis, and the 14-inch was sold with every one of them, so the name of the chip matters more than the look of the machine. About This Mac states it directly. If the laptop will not start, check the ports: the M4 Pro and M4 Max have three Thunderbolt 5 ports, while the base 14-inch M4 uses Thunderbolt 4. The 16-inch was never offered with the base M4 at all.

Within the M4 Pro there are two chips. The 14-inch started with a 12-core CPU and 16-core GPU, with a 14-core CPU and 20-core GPU as the upgrade; every 16-inch M4 Pro has the 14-core, 20-core version. Memory is 24GB or 48GB. What decides an M4 Pro quote

Screen size first: the 16-inch is the model in our table at around £1,450, and the 14-inch quotes below it at the same memory. Then memory, where 48GB machines sit well above 24GB because developers running containers and editors cutting 8K footage buy for headroom they cannot add later. Storage follows, from the 512GB base up to 4TB, and a 2TB or 4TB drive adds real money.

Two options are worth declaring because they are invisible from outside: the nano-texture display, which a particular group of buyers seeks out, and the upgraded 14-core chip in a 14-inch. If you ticked either box at purchase, say so and the quote reflects the exact build. Space Black and Silver are priced the same, although Space Black shows fingerprints and handling marks more readily at grading.

A machine under two years old usually has plenty of battery life left, so cycle count rarely moves an M4 Pro figure. Cosmetic condition does: a dented corner or marks on the display change the grade, and the grade changes the price.

One generation behind the M5 Pro: sell now or keep?

The M5 Pro arrived in March 2026, and the M4 Pro took its big step down that day. What follows is a slower decline until the next MacBook Pro launch, when it becomes two generations old and steps down again. If the laptop is idle, or you have already moved to an M5 Pro, the months before that launch are the better window.

The case for keeping it is just as real: an M4 Pro remains a fast machine for almost any professional workload, and if it is your daily laptop there is no reason to sell it to chase a figure. Selling makes sense for people who have replaced it, because a spare M4 Pro sitting in a drawer loses a little more value at every Apple event.
