The iMac that lasted a year
Apple announced the M3 iMac in October 2023 and replaced it with the M4 a year later, in October 2024. It kept the 2021 design, the thin coloured aluminium and the 24-inch 4.5K Retina display, and changed what was inside: a much faster chip, Wi-Fi 6E and support for up to 24GB of memory.
One year on sale means a smaller used supply than the M1, which stayed on sale for more than two years. That scarcity helps the M3's price, and so does its age: at under three years old it is still a thoroughly current machine for home, study and office work.
The M3 chip also brought hardware-accelerated ray tracing to the iMac for the first time, a real draw for households that play games on the family computer as well as working on it. That keeps the machine appealing to a broader group of second-hand buyers than a plain office desktop would reach.
What changes the price: memory, GPU and ports
Memory is the lever that matters most on this generation, because of what came next. The M4 iMac made 16GB standard, so an 8GB M3 is now compared against a newer machine with twice the memory. That leaves 8GB M3 iMacs toward the bottom of the band while 16GB and 24GB builds hold their value far better. Check the figure in About This Mac before you quote.
The GPU tells you which base model you have. The 8-core GPU version has two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports; the 10-core version adds two USB-C ports and puts Gigabit Ethernet in the power adapter, and it quotes a little higher. Storage starts at 256GB, and 512GB, 1TB or 2TB configurations add to the figure.
Blue, green, pink, silver or any of the rarer shades: the finish plays no part in our figure. The glass does. The display is the most valuable part of any iMac, so mention marks, pressure spots or cracks honestly in the form and the fixed quote will already account for them.
Sell the M3 now, or after the next iMac?
The M3 already took one step down when the M4 arrived. The next step comes when Apple releases a newer 24-inch iMac, at which point the M3 becomes two generations old and buyers compare it with two faster machines.
