The oldest Mac we buy, and why we still buy it

Our buying window starts at the M1 generation. The 2020 mini is the first machine inside it, which makes this page the floor of what we quote - anything older is an Intel mini, and those sit outside our window entirely. They still have a used market; it is simply not with us.

The M1 stays on the list because it is not finished. It runs current macOS, handles everyday work without complaint, and draws so little power that it has become the default cheap always-on machine: home servers, media boxes, a second desk for a student, a dedicated build box. That demand is what keeps a five-year-old computer worth real money instead of nothing.

It is also the honest end of the curve. An M1 mini will not be worth meaningfully more next year, and at some point it will drop out of the window the way Intel machines did. If it is sitting unused in a cupboard, this is the better end of its remaining value.

What an M1 mini is worth

Memory does most of the work. The M1 shipped in 8GB and 16GB, soldered, and the 16GB machines quote noticeably higher because 8GB is now genuinely limiting for the buyers who want these. Storage matters next - 256GB was the common base, and 512GB or 1TB builds quote above it.

Condition matters little. There is no screen and no battery, which is exactly why minis age so gracefully. Scuffs and marks on the case barely move the figure. A no-power M1 still has parts value, and we quote it instantly from a description without asking for photographs.

If you are upgrading to a current mini, quote each machine separately rather than as a lot, so the newer one is priced on its own chip and memory instead of being averaged down.

Before you post it

Sign out of Find My. Activation Lock is the one thing that can hold up payment on any Mac, and on a machine at this end of the price range it is the difference between a straightforward sale and a stalled one.

Then it is a shoebox, some padding, and the free insured label at any Post Office counter. Transit risk is ours up to the full quoted value. Payment follows within 24 hours of the mini passing inspection, and the drive is erased to NIST 800-88 standards afterwards either way.

Keep your keyboard, mouse and display - we buy the computer alone.

Good to know

Mac mini M1 - FAQs

Everything sellers ask us before posting their Mac - answered straight.

How much is a 2020 Mac mini M1 worth in 2026?

Indicatively around £180 in good working condition, with 16GB machines quoting above 8GB. Faulty units typically retain roughly 40-45% of working value. The emailed quote is locked for 14 days.

Is a five-year-old M1 mini still worth selling?

Yes. It runs current macOS and has become a popular cheap always-on machine for home servers and media boxes, which keeps real demand under it. It will not be worth more next year, so sooner is better than later.

Do you buy Intel Mac minis?

No. Our window starts at the M1 generation, so the 2020 M1 is the oldest mini we quote. Intel minis still have a used market, but not with us.

Does 8GB versus 16GB really change the price?

Yes, more than on newer machines. Memory is soldered and 8GB is now limiting for the buyers who want an M1 mini, so 16GB units quote noticeably higher. Check under About This Mac and tell us which you have.

What is SellMacBooks?

SellMacBooks is a UK buy-back service for Apple computers only. We have no shops and no drop-in counter: every sale runs by post, anywhere in the country. You describe your Mac, we email a fixed quote within 2 working hours, you post it free on a fully insured label, and payment leaves by bank transfer within 24 hours of the machine passing inspection.

We buy Apple Silicon Macs only - M1-generation and newer (2020 onward), working or broken. We do not buy Intel Macs. Macs are the only thing we handle, so the person pricing yours knows what the model is worth this month rather than reading it off a generic gadget table. See how it works or read about us.

The inspection

Everything we check before quoting a Mac mini M1

Your quote is built from what you tell us, and the bench check on arrival exists to confirm that description rather than renegotiate it. Here is exactly what we look at:

  • Power-on and a clean boot to the desktop
  • Screen: cracks, dead pixels, backlight and marks
  • Chassis and cosmetics: dents, deep scratches, worn palm rests
  • Battery health percentage and cycle count
  • Keyboard, trackpad, speakers and every port
  • Storage size, memory and chip against the spec you quoted
  • Find My / Activation Lock signed out (we cannot buy a locked Mac)
  • Accessories included, such as the original charger

The quoted price is fixed and locked for 14 days. If the machine differs from your description, you get photos and a plain explanation with a revised offer - accept it, or decline and we return the Mac free and insured. Full detail on the three grades is on our grading page.

Versus the alternatives

How we compare

Selling a Mac in the UK usually comes down to a big trade-in site, a marketplace listing, or a specialist buyer like us. The differences that cost sellers money are these:

  • Big trade-in sites can keep you waiting days after delivery. We pay within 24 hours of your Mac passing inspection.
  • eBay takes roughly 14% in fees, plus postage, plus return and scam risk. Our quote is the amount that lands in your bank.
  • Some buyers put the courier damage risk on you in their small print. Our label is insured at our expense, both ways.
  • Return fees for declining a revised offer are common in this market. Ours are always free, both ways, whatever inspection finds.
  • Most quotes quietly expire or float with the market. Yours is locked for 14 days.

The longer version, option by option, is in our guide to the best place to sell a MacBook in the UK and our MacBook trade-in comparison.
