The first Studio, and the one that proved the point
When the Studio launched in 2022 nobody knew how a small pro desktop would hold value, because Apple had not sold one before. Four years on the answer is clear: better than any laptop of the same age. An M1 Max Studio bought for £1,999 still fetches around £700 with us, where a MacBook Pro from the same year has fallen further and faster.
The reasons are mundane and durable. Desktops live gentle lives - no drops, no battery cycles, no hinge wear - so used Studios inspect close to how they are described, and a market with few condition surprises is one where buyers pay confidently. And an M1 Max still handles 4K timelines and large builds, so it is bought as a tool rather than as an old gadget.
This page is also the honest end of the Studio curve. The M1 Max will not be worth more next year, and at some point the M1 generation will drop out of buying windows the way Intel machines did. If it has been demoted to email duty, this is the better end of its remaining value.
What a 2022 Studio is worth today
Memory does most of the work on this generation. The M1 Max shipped in 32GB and 64GB, soldered, and the 64GB machines quote clearly higher because the buyers who want a used Studio are exactly the ones whose work eats memory. GPU cores (24 or 32) and SSD size follow, in that order.
If you own an M1 Ultra rather than a Max, quote it separately - it is a different machine with a different buyer pool, and averaging the two in one conversation only pulls the Ultra figure down. This page and its price band are for the Max.
Faults barely move a Studio. A dead port, a noisy fan or a machine that will not power on still carries real parts value because the board and memory are what refurbishers want. Describe the fault in the form for an instant quote; no photographs, no waiting for an assessment.
From your desk to a bank transfer
We arrange free insured courier collection for the Studio, so a machine worth several hundred pounds never has to be carried to a Post Office counter. Pack it in a strong double-walled box with padding on every side; the machine is dense, and density is its own worst enemy in a drop. Transit risk is ours up to the full quoted value.
Sign out of iCloud and disable Find My before collection. Activation Lock is the one thing only you can remove, and on a machine at this end of the price range it is the difference between a straightforward sale and a stalled one. The drive is erased to NIST 800-88 standards after inspection either way.
Payment lands within 24 hours of the Studio passing inspection. If the offer is revised for something undeclared and you decline, it comes back to you free and insured. We buy the computer alone - your display and peripherals stay with you.
Good to know
Mac Studio M1 Max - FAQs
Everything sellers ask us before posting their Mac - answered straight.
How much is a Mac Studio M1 Max worth in 2026?
Indicatively around £700 in good working condition for a 32GB build, with 64GB machines quoting higher. Faulty units typically retain roughly 45% of working value. The emailed quote is exact and locked for 14 days.
Is a four-year-old Studio still worth selling?
Yes. The M1 Max still does real work - 4K editing, large builds - and desktops inspect close to described condition, so buyers pay confidently. It will not be worth more next year, so sooner beats later.
Do you buy the M1 Ultra Studio too?
Yes, but quote it separately. The Ultra has its own buyer pool and price band; this page and its figures are for the M1 Max.
Do you buy faulty M1 Max Studios?
Yes. A no-power or port-fault Studio still holds parts value because the board and memory are what buyers want. Describe the fault for an instant online quote - no photos needed.
About the buyer
What is SellMacBooks?
SellMacBooks is a UK buy-back service for Apple computers only. We have no shops and no drop-in counter: every sale runs by post, anywhere in the country. You describe your Mac, we email a fixed quote within 2 working hours, you post it free on a fully insured label, and payment leaves by bank transfer within 24 hours of the machine passing inspection.
We buy Apple Silicon Macs only - M1-generation and newer (2020 onward), working or broken. We do not buy Intel Macs. Macs are the only thing we handle, so the person pricing yours knows what the model is worth this month rather than reading it off a generic gadget table. See how it works or read about us.
The inspection
Everything we check before quoting a Mac Studio M1 Max
Your quote is built from what you tell us, and the bench check on arrival exists to confirm that description rather than renegotiate it. Here is exactly what we look at:
- Power-on and a clean boot to the desktop
- Screen: cracks, dead pixels, backlight and marks
- Chassis and cosmetics: dents, deep scratches, worn palm rests
- Battery health percentage and cycle count
- Keyboard, trackpad, speakers and every port
- Storage size, memory and chip against the spec you quoted
- Find My / Activation Lock signed out (we cannot buy a locked Mac)
- Accessories included, such as the original charger
The quoted price is fixed and locked for 14 days. If the machine differs from your description, you get photos and a plain explanation with a revised offer - accept it, or decline and we return the Mac free and insured. Full detail on the three grades is on our grading page.
Versus the alternatives
How we compare
Selling a Mac in the UK usually comes down to a big trade-in site, a marketplace listing, or a specialist buyer like us. The differences that cost sellers money are these:
- Big trade-in sites can keep you waiting days after delivery. We pay within 24 hours of your Mac passing inspection.
- eBay takes roughly 14% in fees, plus postage, plus return and scam risk. Our quote is the amount that lands in your bank.
- Some buyers put the courier damage risk on you in their small print. Our label is insured at our expense, both ways.
- Return fees for declining a revised offer are common in this market. Ours are always free, both ways, whatever inspection finds.
- Most quotes quietly expire or float with the market. Yours is locked for 14 days.
The longer version, option by option, is in our guide to the best place to sell a MacBook in the UK and our MacBook trade-in comparison.
