Why the M2 Pro holds up against newer Pros
The M2 Pro was on sale for less than a year: launched in January 2023, replaced by the M3 Pro that November. A short production run means fewer machines on the used market, and that alone keeps prices firmer than for a typical laptop three chips behind.
The second reason is technical. The M2 Pro has 200GB/s of memory bandwidth, and its successor, the M3 Pro, cut that to 150GB/s. For bandwidth-hungry work such as large audio sessions, big photo libraries and local models, a well-specified M2 Pro is a sidegrade rather than a downgrade from the next generation, and informed buyers know it.
It also uses the design that carried on through the M3 and M4 Pro generations: HDMI, an SD card slot, MagSafe 3 and the mini-LED Liquid Retina XDR display. To a buyer holding it, nothing about the machine looks dated.
What sets the price on an M2 Pro
Size and chip configuration come first. The 14-inch was sold with a 10-core or 12-core CPU (16-core or 19-core GPU); every 16-inch M2 Pro has the 12-core CPU and 19-core GPU. Memory is the next lever and the one used buyers ask about first: 16GB was standard, 32GB was the upgrade, and 32GB machines quote clearly higher.
Storage starts at 512GB on both sizes, so there is no weak 256GB base to worry about; 1TB and 2TB builds add a premium. Then condition. Now three years old or more, many M2 Pros have a few hundred battery cycles behind them. Anything above 80% maximum capacity counts as normal ageing; below that we price in a battery service, which trims the figure a little but never pushes the machine into the faulty band.
Space Grey and Silver quote the same. The original 67W, 96W or 140W charger helps the grade slightly if you still have it, and the box helps a little more; neither is required.
